Russian troops deployed a drone-delivered gas grenade against Ukrainian soldiers after losing frontline positions during a counterattack by Ukrainian forces, according to the 225th Separate Assault Regiment on May 11.

The Ukrainian unit said its fighters had successfully stormed and recaptured positions previously occupied by Russian forces before coming under renewed attack involving both FPV drones and what was described as an unknown toxic substance.

“A group of fighters from the 225th Separate Assault Regiment counterattacked and retook positions previously occupied by the enemy. After that, our fighters were targeted with an FPV drone and a drop containing an unknown poisonous substance,” the regiment said in a statement accompanying video footage from the incident.

According to the Ukrainian military, the suspected chemical munition was dropped directly onto a bunker occupied by Ukrainian troops.

“The fighters managed to leave the bunker in time and relocate to another position,” the regiment added.

The unit said the incident had been documented and that all available evidence had been transferred to the relevant authorities for inclusion in ongoing investigations into alleged Russian war crimes.

The regiment did not specify the type of substance used, and no official laboratory analysis has yet been made public.

Allegations of Russian forces using chemical agents or riot-control substances delivered by drones have surfaced repeatedly throughout the full-scale war, particularly in heavily contested frontline sectors where FPV drones and trench warfare dominate combat operations.

The released footage appears to show the munition being dropped into or near the Ukrainian position shortly after the counterattack succeeded in dislodging Russian troops from the area.

Earlier, Ukrainian unmanned aerial systems targeted a Russian-operated facility reportedly used to manufacture chemical munitions in the occupied city of Avdiivka.
