UK May Join International Effort to Restore Damaged Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

The United Kingdom may contribute to the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most significant religious and cultural sites, which sustained damage during a Russian strike in the early hours of June 15.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that he discussed the potential for British involvement during a meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer following the G7 summit.

The discussions between the two leaders took place in the wake of the 52nd G7 summit held in the French resort town of Évian-les-Bains, which began on June 15 and concludes on June 17.
Beyond the rebuilding of the historic monastery, the conversation between Zelenskyy and Starmer focused on the consequences of recent Russian strikes, the implementation of agreements reached during the G7 summit, and broader strategies to increase pressure on Russia and reinforce Ukraine’s air defense systems.
In the lead-up to these discussions, President Zelenskyy showcased the damage inflicted upon the Assumption Cathedral to US President Donald Trump. Reports from the summit indicate that the American leader expressed his disapproval regarding the destruction of the site.

The initiative to restore the Lavra is part of a larger diplomatic effort to secure international aid for Ukrainian infrastructure and cultural landmarks targeted during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
During the overnight strikes of June 14–15, 2026, Russian forces targeted Ukraine’s cultural and religious landmarks, causing significant damage to the UNESCO-listed Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
The attack triggered a fire that engulfed the roof of the historic Dormition Cathedral, which forced the urgent evacuation of sacred relics and liturgical items from the site.
Ukrainian officials described the strikes as a deliberate attempt to destroy the nation’s history and identity, while Metropolitan Epiphanius characterized the destruction of the monastery as an act of revenge by Russian forces for their failure to seize it.
