UK to Build Six Hybrid Warships to Counter Russian Activity in the North Atlantic

The UK Ministry of Defense has announced plans to construct at least six new advanced “hybrid” naval vessels equipped with unmanned systems, according to the BBC on June 29.

The new ships will be capable of coordinating drone operations in the air, on the surface, and underwater. Defense officials say the concept is designed to strengthen air defense capabilities and expand naval operational reach without significantly increasing crew sizes or overall costs.
The vessels are expected to enter service in the 2030s and will be deployed as part of efforts to counter Russian activity in the North Atlantic, protect critical underwater infrastructure, and reinforce NATO deterrence, according to BBC.
The government did not disclose how much funding has been allocated within the Defense Investment Plan for the development of the programme.

Officials said the ships would support operations “to counter Russian activity in the North Atlantic and High North, protect critical underwater infrastructure, and enhance NATO deterrence.”
The announcement comes amid heightened UK maritime enforcement activity targeting vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.” On June 14, British forces intercepted and detained the oil tanker SMYRTOS in the English Channel, marking the first such operation since new legal powers were expanded to target ships suspected of helping Moscow circumvent sanctions.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the operation, stating that British military personnel had successfully stopped the vessel.

“This successful operation strikes another blow against Russia and serves as a reminder to those fuelling Putin’s war in Ukraine that we will not let them hide,” he wrote on X.
According to the UK government and Ministry of Defense, the mission involved Royal Marines from 42 Commando alongside officers from the National Crime Agency.
The tanker, sailing under the flag of Cameroon, had departed from Russia’s Baltic port of Ust-Luga before entering UK waters.
The six-hour operation was supported by multiple military assets, including Chinook, Merlin Mk4, and Wildcat helicopters deployed from the Royal Navy’s Maritime Air Group.

Following the interception, UK authorities are now considering the disposal of the seized cargo. According to The Telegraph, officials are weighing plans to sell approximately 98,000 tonnes of Russian crude oil found aboard the vessel, with proceeds potentially directed toward support for Ukraine.
Since the operation, the tanker has remained anchored off the coast of Weymouth under Ministry of Defense control. The vessel’s captain, Indian national Ajay Pant, has been charged with sanctions evasion.
