Ukrainian forces struck a Russian small missile warship near the naval base in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, during overnight operations, according to the Ukrainian General Staff on May 7.

The targeted vessel was identified as a Project 22800 Karakurt-class missile ship—a platform capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles frequently used by Russia in strikes against Ukraine. Ukrainian military officials said the extent of the damage is still being assessed.

The strike marked one of the latest Ukrainian long-range attacks against Russian military infrastructure far from the front line, extending all the way to the Caspian Sea region.

“The Defense Forces of Ukraine struck a Project 22800 Karakurt multipurpose small missile ship in the area of the Kaspiysk base,” the General Staff said in its statement.

In addition to the naval strike, Ukrainian forces also targeted several Russian military facilities in occupied parts of eastern Ukraine overnight.

According to the General Staff, Ukrainian strikes hit a Russian command post in Sosnivka in the temporarily occupied Luhansk region, a UAV control center near Yasne in the Donetsk region, an ammunition depot in Kalmykivka, and a fuel and lubricant storage site near Smolianynove.

Ukraine also reported strikes against Russian troop concentrations near Dersove in the Donetsk region and Smyle in the Zaporizhzhia region.

The Karakurt-class ships were designed as compact but heavily armed cruise missile carriers for the Russian Navy.

Despite their relatively small size—roughly 800 tons displacement and around 60 meters in length—the vessels carry a vertical launch system with eight cells capable of firing Kalibr cruise missiles or P-800 Oniks supersonic anti-ship missiles.

The ships are additionally equipped with a 76.2 mm AK-176MA naval gun, AK-630 close-in weapon systems, and, in later variants, Pantsir-ME naval air defense systems.

Just days before, Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck a same-class Russian missile ship capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles during a drone attack on the port of Primorsk, in the Russian Leningrad region.
