Ukraine has received the remains of 528 individuals who, according to the Russian side, may be Ukrainian service members killed during the war, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported on May 16.

According to the Coordination Headquarters, the bodies were returned as part of another repatriation operation conducted with the involvement of multiple Ukrainian state agencies and security structures.

Ukrainian investigators and forensic experts are expected to begin identification procedures in the coming days, including mandatory DNA examinations of all returned remains.

The Coordination Headquarters stated that the repatriation effort was carried out jointly with the Joint Center at the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, the Secretariat for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances, the State Emergency Service, and other institutions within Ukraine’s security and defense sector.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the process of identifying repatriated bodies can take a significant amount of time due to the condition in which remains are transferred.

Ukraine’s Interior Ministry previously stated that Russian authorities have at times transferred multiple bodies in a single bag, while remains belonging to one individual have occasionally been discovered across different packages or during separate repatriation stages.

The ministry also noted that Ukrainian forensic specialists conduct DNA testing on every body or fragment returned to Ukraine. Officials previously reported cases in which Russia allegedly attempted to transfer the bodies of Russian citizens together with fallen Ukrainian soldiers during exchanges.

The Coordination Headquarters also thanked the International Committee of the Red Cross for assisting and supporting the repatriation process.

Earlier, Ukraine completed the first phase of a major “1,000-for-1,000” prisoner exchange with Russia, securing the return of 205 Ukrainian service members from captivity on May 15, according to the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War. Most of the released soldiers had reportedly spent nearly four years in captivity, including many captured during the defense of Mariupol.
