Ukraine Requests 300 Patriot Missiles to Shield Airspace for Winter

Ukraine requested 300 Patriot air defense missiles from international partners to secure its airspace during the upcoming winter season.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined a calculated requirement of 100 interceptors per month over a three-month period.

Speaking during a meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing" on July 13, Zelenskyy emphasized the critical need for early preparation, noting that sufficient defense capabilities would reduce Russia’s incentives to protract the hostilities through the colder months as Ukraine actively works to push Russia toward negotiations.
The current strategic environment highlights significant challenges for Ukrainian air defense, particularly due to a severe shortage of missiles capable of intercepting ballistic targets.
Russia has increasingly relied on ballistic strikes during recent large-scale aerial attacks, exposing gaps in the defense network where several recent barrages resulted in zero ballistic interceptions by Ukrainian forces.
In response to these developments, Zelenskyy framed the requested "winter package" as a vital measure to protect both Ukrainian and broader European security.

He stated that the current summer season has already presented severe difficulties for Russia, adding that Ukraine intends to continue and intensify its medium- and long-range strike operations to maintain pressure.
"This summer has already become the most difficult for Russia. Our long-range operations and medium-range strikes will be continued. We will strengthen them," Zelenskyy stated.
The Ukrainian leadership maintains that robust air defense remains the primary mechanism for stabilizing the front lines and neutralizing Russia’s strategy of attrition. By securing a reliable supply of Patriot interceptors, Kyiv aims to deny Russia the tactical advantages typically sought during winter campaign phases.

"We calculated that this package should include 100 missiles for Patriot per month — 300 missiles for the winter. I ask you to consider this," Zelenskyy noted during the coalition meeting.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian President announced that Ukraine and its European partners were actively developing a joint anti-ballistic missile system named "Freyja," which could become operational within the next 12 months.
He emphasized the urgent need for a stronger, more independent European air shield, noting that while Ukraine was finalizing its proprietary interceptor missile, international partners possessed the advanced radar technologies and key components necessary to make the platform viable.
Zelenskyy warned that the global ballistic threat would continue to intensify due to deepening military cooperation between Russia, Iran, and North Korea, stating that Russia was placing its final bet on ballistic missile strikes against Ukrainian cities to break the population and deprive the country of its ability to defend itself.
