Ukraine to Deploy 8,000 Octopus Interceptor Drones Against Russian Attacks

The Ukrainian Defense Forces are set to receive 8,000 Octopus-100 interceptor drones designed to strengthen air defense and increase the success rate of neutralizing aerial targets.
Developed within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Octopus drone utilizes an automatic guidance system specifically to intercept Shahed-type loitering munitions, according to Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Mykhailo Fedorov.

The production programme already includes 29 Ukrainian companies that have received licences, along with the British government. Four domestic enterprises have already signed state contracts to supply these drones to the military.
The project moved forward following a government decision to transfer military technologies to Ukrainian manufacturers while maintaining ownership rights. Licenses were granted to the defense holding TAF Industries and the electronic warfare manufacturer UNWAVE.
According to the executive director of TAF Industries, a primary challenge to scaling production was the reliance on several critical components. These parts were in limited supply, which prevented a rapid increase in manufacturing speed. To address this, developers and manufacturers worked together to find replacements for the scarce components.
As reported by the specialized defense news outlet Militarnyi, the Octopus was first presented in October 2025 during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the United Kingdom. This interceptor is the first joint defense project under an agreement between Ukraine and the UK focused on the exchange of military technologies.

The United Kingdom is expected to produce approximately 2,000 interceptor drones every month. The first tests of the device took place in January 2026, marking a significant step in Ukraine's defense capabilities since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In January 2026, Ukraine and the United Kingdom successfully conducted the first test flights of the Octopus interceptor drones. This joint project, developed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces with significant British engineering support, aimed to provide a scalable and affordable solution for neutralizing aerial threats like Shahed drones.
During the "Britain–Ukraine: Centenary Partnership" forum , officials confirmed that the initial units performed successfully during trials and were prepared for immediate delivery to the front lines.
