Ukraine’s FP-1 Drones Strike Russia’s TANECO Refinery a Day After Major Ufa Hit

Ukrainian long-range drones struck an oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, marking another attack on Russia’s refining industry just a day after a key processing unit was hit at a major refinery in Ufa, according to the Exilenova+ OSINT community on August 20.
Witness footage indicates that Ukraine’s Armed Forces used FP-1 long-range strike drones in the attack, while Russian air defenses attempted to intercept the incoming aircraft.

One video captured the moment of an apparent impact on the refinery grounds. Preliminary OSINT assessments identified the targeted facility as the TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk.
TANECO is one of Russia’s newest and largest refining facilities and is considered a strategic asset of Russian oil producer Tatneft. The complex produces more than 20 types of petroleum products.
Its output includes gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, base oils, marine fuel, and other refined petroleum products. The refinery has a reported oil-processing depth of up to 99%, allowing it to extract a particularly high share of usable products from crude oil.

Authorities in Tatarstan issued an air raid warning over the threat of drones at around 3:30 am, with Nizhnekamsk among the areas specifically warned of a possible attack.
The latest strike comes as Ukraine continues targeting Russian refining infrastructure in an effort to reduce the production of fuel used by the Russian military and broader economy. Damage to critical refinery equipment can force operators to reduce crude-processing volumes and put additional pressure on domestic fuel supplies.
The Nizhnekamsk attack followed another strike on Russia’s oil industry only a day earlier.

During the previous attack, Ukrainian drones struck the ELOU-AVT-6 unit at the Bashneft-Ufa Oil Refinery, a key piece of equipment responsible for crude oil desalting and primary fractionation.
The unit can process more than 6 million metric tons of crude oil annually.
Primary fractionation separates crude into products including kerosene, gasoline components, diesel fractions, and fuel oil, which are then sent to secondary processing units for further refining into finished fuels.
Bashneft-UNPZ is the oldest of Ufa’s three major refineries. The other two are Bashneft-Novoil and Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim, all of which are part of Russia’s Rosneft-controlled refining network.
Together, the Ufa facilities produce Euro-4 and Euro-5 motor fuels, aviation kerosene, bitumen, and petrochemical feedstocks.
