Ukraine’s Fire Point says its FP-9 ballistic missile is one solid-fuel engine test away from flight trials, after which the company expects the weapon to begin striking targets inside Russia.

Denys Shtilerman, co-owner and chief designer of Fire Point, discussed the missile’s development in an interview with LIGA.net published on July 8.

Asked when the company expects to provide the military with ballistic missiles for strikes against Russian targets, Shtilerman said the key remaining step is engine testing.

“Only one thing separates us from that, and that is engine testing. As soon as we test the engine, we begin flight trials,” Shtilerman said.

According to him, once engineers confirm that the missile is controllable and performs according to its programmed algorithm, Fire Point will move to combat testing against targets in Russia.

“As soon as we see that the missile is guided and does what the algorithm tells it to do, we begin tests on Russia. That’s it,” Shtilerman said.

He expects FP-9 ballistic missiles to begin hitting targets inside Russia this fall.

The FP-9 is expected to have a range of up to 855 kilometers, or about 531 miles. Its speed is expected to reach 2,200 meters per second, while its warhead payload is projected at 800 kilograms.

The missile is designed to fly at altitudes of up to 70 kilometers and launch from a mobile ground-based platform.

With a claimed accuracy of around 20 meters, the FP-9 would be able to strike large targets deep in Russia’s rear, adding another long-range weapon to Ukraine’s expanding strike arsenal.

In addition, Ukraine’s FP-7.x missile has completed its first fully guided flight, a test that could become a key step toward building FREYJA—Europe’s future interceptor designed to hunt ballistic missiles.
