World’s Largest Shipping Giant Maersk Halts Ukraine Port Service After Russian Attacks

Global shipping company Maersk has temporarily suspended its feeder service to Ukraine’s Chornomorsk Fishing Port, the company announced on July 22. The decision cites deteriorating security conditions in the Black Sea following an increase in Russian attacks on Ukrainian port infrastructure and commercial shipping.

The decision comes after several recent strikes on civilian vessels bound for Ukrainian ports and growing concerns among international shipping operators over the safety of maritime trade routes.
According to a statement from Maersk Ukraine, the company’s feeder operator “is unable to continue providing the service to Ukraine via Chornomorsk Fishing Port” because of the current operational environment.
“The service via Chornomorsk Fishing Port is temporarily suspended until further notice,” the company said.
As part of the suspension, the vessel MEDKON MIRA V.629S, which had been scheduled to discharge cargo in Chornomorsk, will instead unload at the Romanian port of Constanța.
Maersk also said that all import shipments destined for Chornomorsk that are currently in, or expected to arrive at, Port Said, Egypt, will likewise be rerouted to Constanța. The company will coordinate onward transportation options from Romania to Ukraine with customers, including transit arrangements, delivery times, and associated costs.
For exporters, Maersk said customers may cancel bookings free of charge without cancellation or amendment fees. Containers that have already reached the terminal in Chornomorsk may alternatively be redirected to Constanța while retaining the existing ocean freight rate, with inland transport from Ukraine to Romania arranged separately.
The suspension follows a sharp deterioration in security conditions for commercial shipping in the northwestern Black Sea.
The security situation worsened further this week. On July 21, Russian drones struck the Liberia-flagged tanker Gas Lisbon while it was sailing from Egypt to Ukraine’s port of Reni, approximately 20 nautical miles off Romania’s coast.
Two days earlier, on July 19, a Russian missile strike hit the bulk carrier Golden Leo, which was transporting grain near Odesa, killing 10 crew members according to updated Ukrainian authorities' figures.
