Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly responded on September 21 to US President Donald Trump’s social media statement, agreeing that Russia’s war against Ukraine “must be ended” and confirming that Kyiv is actively discussing diplomatic de-escalation frameworks with Washington.

Trump called for an immediate end to the “ridiculous and never ending War,” arguing that “the whole World suffers” from the war and pointing to an estimated 25,000 monthly casualties as a primary reason to halt the fighting.
In a statement posted on X, Zelenskyy affirmed that Ukraine has sought peace since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and highlighted ongoing dialogues with the Trump administration aimed at formulating concrete steps to bring the war to a close.

He explicitly outlined Kyiv’s conditions for a partial energy and infrastructure truce, noting that matching Ukrainian de-escalation measures would depend on a complete halt to Russian attacks against Ukrainian civilian supply systems.
“Ukraine’s energy sector, critical infrastructure, and our food exports must stop being targets for Russia, and this will lead to matching de-escalation steps on our part,” Zelenskyy stated, adding that “solutions are possible” and will be further detailed during bilateral discussions with US partners on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
While expressing willingness to advance reciprocal security guarantees, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine’s long-range drone technology has permanently altered the dynamics of the war by ensuring that the aggressor state experiences direct consequences.
“It will no longer be the case that only the country under attack suffers,” Zelenskyy stated. “The nature of war is now such that the aggressor will suffer as well. Technology makes this possible”.
The Ukrainian leader’s remarks follow days of intense diplomatic exchanges over rising global energy prices, with Kyiv emphasizing that any halt to its deep strikes on Russian oil facilities remains contingent on reciprocal protection for Ukraine’s own energy grid and critical infrastructure.
Zelenskyy recently proposed a conditional energy de-escalation framework to Western partners, indicating that Kyiv is prepared to halt strikes on Russian refineries if international partners can secure and guarantee a complete end to Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy, port, and logistics infrastructure.
In a statement, he emphasized that any mutual halt must be reliable, long-term, and enforceable rather than a brief operational pause. Expressing skepticism regarding Moscow’s willingness to abide by an agreement, Zelenskyy warned that Russia might seek temporary relief for its domestic fuel markets ahead of elections before resuming strikes.
