Azerbaijan Summons Russian Ambassador Over Pro-Kremlin Propagandist Statements

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Mikhail Yevdokimov on August 18 to deliver a formal protest regarding provocative statements and threats directed at the nation and its leadership across Russian media platforms.
During the meeting, diplomats expressed deep concern over hostile rhetoric broadcast on August 13 on the program "Purity of Understanding," as well as August 7 radio reports on Sputnik alleging the Azerbaijani leadership had been placed on Russia's extremist list, as reported by European Pravda on August 18.

The ministry further highlighted offensive materials aired on August 9 via YouTube and on August 16 via the Spas television channel.
"Purity of Understanding" is an ideological podcast and analytical project co-hosted by Russian political strategist Alexey Chadayev and political commentator Semyon Uralov. Broadcast across major Russian video platforms, the show focuses on geopolitical commentary, domestic policy analysis, and military strategy through a distinctly pro-Kremlin lens.
The foreign ministry communicated to the diplomat that discussions regarding potential intervention in internal political matters, alongside public calls for physical violence against the Azerbaijani leadership and population, represent unacceptable behavior.
Officials emphasized that prior political appeals to stop these media operations have gone unheeded, as aggressive broadcasts have continued to escalate. Azerbaijani representatives requested immediate, effective measures from Moscow to stop threats and violent rhetoric within the Russian media environment.

Bilateral diplomatic relations between both countries have experienced significant strain following a winter 2024 aviation disaster involving an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer aircraft flying from Baku to Grozny, which resulted in 38 fatalities.
Azerbaijani aviation officials concluded that the aircraft encountered external physical and technical interference during the flight.
Ten months following the crash, Russian leader Vladimir Putin acknowledged that the airliner was brought down by Russian air defense systems, attributing responsibility for the broader environment to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On July 22, 2026, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the significance of a reported secret meeting between former senior Russian and German officials in Azerbaijan, stating it had no role in the actual peace process.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi emphasized that the Ukrainian side had not authorized anyone to represent it and noted that the significance of such discussions for the real peace process was close to zero.
