Coffin Prices Rise 105% in Russia. War Casualties Continue to Mount

Coffin manufacturing costs in Russia have climbed 105% since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while new funeral businesses opened at the fastest pace in five years in the first half of 2026, according to The Moscow Times on August 7.

The outlet estimated that coffin costs about $113 on average in June 2026, compared with roughly $55 in February 2022, an increase of 105%, based on Russia’s Rosstat statistics.
According to that Rosstat data, coffin costs began rising in the first months of the invasion and accelerated after the September 2022 mobilization order, jumping roughly a third between that month and February 2023.
Annual increases followed at 13.6% in 2022, 37.2% in 2023, 11.6% in 2024, 9.3% in 2025, and a further 7% across the first half of 2026.
Grave-digging services rose by about 60% over the same period, though Rosstat removed the service from its consumer price basket in 2026 and stopped publishing the figures.

The funeral industry's turnover last year ran more than 1.5 times its pre-war 2021 level, and 1,543 new funeral organizations opened over the year. A further 995 firms entered the market in the first half of 2026, the fastest pace recorded in five years.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated Russia's military had suffered around 1.4 million casualties by June 2026, including 450,000 killed.
Separately, the investigative outlet Mediazona and the BBC Russian Service confirmed the deaths of 352,000 Russian soldiers by the end of 2025.
At the same time, over the past 24-hour period, Russian forces were estimated to have lost around 1,470 troops, two tanks, and 48 artillery systems, along with six multiple launch rocket systems and two air defense systems.
