Germany and Slovakia Push for Stronger Pressure on Russia to Protect Ukraine

Germany and Slovakia issued a joint declaration on September 29, 2026, agreeing to increase pressure on Russia through economic sanctions to stop Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to German Federal Foreign Office.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár reaffirmed their backing for Ukraine’s defense efforts, its European integration path, and a defense spending target of 5% of GDP aligned with NATO goals.

The two foreign ministers described increasing pressure on Moscow as a key shared interest. The statement stated: "Comprehensive strengthening of pressure on Russia, in particular through sanctions, to induce it to end its brutal war of aggression and engage in constructive negotiations with the goal of achieving an immediate ceasefire and a comprehensive, lasting and just peace in Ukraine."
Berlin and Bratislava confirmed their commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
The document noted: "Both countries agree to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders on the basis of general principles of international law and not to accept Russia's attempts to forcibly redraw borders through its war of aggression, which violates international law."
Beyond sanctions and diplomatic measures, both nations outlined joint priorities focused on providing military and logistical support for Ukrainian defense.
They also confirmed backing for the European integration of Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans. The partnership reaches into energy and regional security structure.
Germany and Slovakia agreed to strengthen European energy stability and diversify energy supplies in line with REPowerEU objectives, taking into account the unique needs of individual EU member states.
To enhance defense capabilities, the two countries plan to strengthen the Euro-Atlantic security framework alongside NATO. This includes achieving the agreed 5% of GDP defense spending threshold, mobilizing financial resources for defense operations, and expanding the European defense manufacturing industry.
This agreement was adopted as part of an ongoing bilateral framework initiated in August 2017. Approaching the ten-year mark of this partnership, both foreign ministries agreed to hold regular diplomatic consultations on foreign, security, and European policy matters.
The strategic partnership between Germany and Ukraine led to the launch of a joint initiative for the production of long-range "Deep Strike" drones. During the announcement, defense officials noted that the venture focused on the development of unmanned aerial systems with a range of up to 1,500 kilometers.
The agreement also included the transfer of technology and the establishment of maintenance hubs within Ukraine, which allowed for the systems to be serviced locally. By integrating Ukrainian combat data into the design process, the collaboration aimed to create technology capable of bypassing electronic warfare systems more effectively.
