The retail network Metro , whose Russian operations were placed under temporary state management less than a month ago, announced a contribution of $10.3 million to the "People's Front. Everything for Victory! " organization, as reported by Meduza.

According to a press statement released by Metro, the transferred funds are intended "for purchasing equipment required by military personnel on the front line."

Representatives of the receiving organization noted that the donated capital will address "urgent matters" related to acquiring vehicles, communication and reconnaissance equipment, anti-drone systems, and "other items needed by combatants in the special military operation ."

"As a part of the economic system of Russia, we consider it important to participate in strategic initiatives of the state," stated Johannes Tholey, Chief Executive Officer of Metro in Russia.

The announcement follows the ongoing realignment of foreign-owned corporate assets inside Russia amidst the broader economic measures implemented since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On September 28, Russian leader Vladimir Putin issued a decree transferring the Russian assets of international wholesale retailer Metro into the temporary management of Torg RUS Management Company JSC, as reported by The Moscow Times.

Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that one of the factors taken into account when making the decision was that the origin was an unfriendly country. Since March 2022, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, more than one thousand companies had exited the Russian market.

Dozens of foreign-owned enterprises were placed under temporary management under a spring 2023 decree enacted as a response to the seizure of Russian assets abroad and actions taken by the US and its allies.

Founded in Germany in 1964 as a self-service B2B wholesaler, Metro AG is a Düsseldorf-headquartered international retail and wholesale giant.

"People's Front. Everything for Victory!" is a state-backed Russian organization created to raise funds and collect supplies, such as drones, vehicles, and combat gear, directly for Russian troops on the frontline. Originally established in 2011 by Vladimir Putin as a political movement, it now functions as a primary logistical fund supporting Russia's military operations.

In Russian state terminology, the term "special military operation" serves as a official political euphemism for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
