The Swedish Armed Forces will deploy a Patriot air defense system along with approximately 100 personnel to Rzeszów, Poland, to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank and protect a vital logistics hub supplying military and civilian aid to Ukraine.

This mission will mark the first time Sweden deploys its Patriot surface-to-air missile system on an official NATO task, according to a press release by the Swedish Armed Forces on October 6.

The unit is scheduled to operate under NATO command from early December through the end of the year, with plans to extend the mission through the first half of 2027.

The Patriot air defense system is a ground-based air and missile defense platform built to shield forces and critical areas from airborne threats. Operating under NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), the deployment will contribute to NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense.

The mission will be carried out by personnel from the Air Defense Regiment (Lv 6) alongside support teams from the Blekinge Air Wing (F 17).

Chief of the Swedish Army Johan Pekkari emphasized the dual commitment of the deployment, stating, “As Allies, we share responsibility for protecting and defending NATO territory. At the same time, supporting Ukraine remains a priority for Sweden. By deploying advanced capabilities from the Air Defense Regiment and Blekinge Air Wing, Sweden will strengthen NATO’s eastern flank in Poland while helping to protect the vital support effort for Ukraine.”

Addressing the demands of the mission, Sofia Westermark, Commander of the Air Defense Regiment, noted, “The security environment and the complexity of the mission place significant demands on the unit. We are well trained, well prepared and have the right composition to accomplish the mission.”

This deployment comes as NATO's eastern flank faces heightened security threats, underlined by recent incidents along the border. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Russian drone strikes had occurred near the Ukrainian-Polish border in the Volyn region, targeting a gas station near the Yahodyn checkpoint.

In response, Poland deployed military aircraft and temporarily suspended operations at the Lublin and Rzeszów airports. Although an unmanned aerial vehicle crashed roughly four kilometers from the border, military officials confirmed that no violation of Polish airspace took place and no direct impacts occurred at the border crossing facility.
