Honduras intends to acquire drones from Ukraine as part of a broader strategy to reinforce border security and curb drug trafficking, President Nasry Asfura announced on June 22, as reported by Euronews.

According to the outlet, the move follows Asfura's visit to Kyiv last week, where he held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

During the Kyiv meeting, Zelenskyy promoted Ukraine's expertise in drone technologies, describing the country's defense industry as one of the world's most advanced in the field.

“In terms of security today, in military and drone technologies, Ukraine is one of the strongest in the world. And I know this interests you,” Zelenskyy said.

Few days after the meeting, speaking to AFP during the General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Panama City, Asfura said the aircraft would strengthen surveillance capabilities in hard-to-reach border regions and improve the country's response to organized crime.

“We are talking about drones to protect our borders, to efficiently guard our borders, to fight against organized crime with high-tech equipment,” he said, Euronews reported.

Why it matters

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine has rapidly expanded its drone industry, deploying unmanned systems for reconnaissance, strike missions, and long-range attacks while becoming one of the leading developers of military drone technology.

According to Euronews, for Honduras, the planned purchase comes amid persistent security challenges. The country remains a major transit point for cocaine moving north from South America, while authorities have increasingly uncovered coca plantations and cocaine-processing facilities within its own territory, suggesting an expanding domestic role in the narcotics trade.

Powerful criminal organizations continue to exert influence across parts of the country through violence, extortion, and control of trafficking routes. Honduras' homicide rate stands at roughly 24 per 100,000 people.

Beyond security operations, Asfura noted that the drones under consideration could also support civilian activities, including agricultural monitoring, the outlet added. The proposed purchase complements Honduras' wider efforts to expand security cooperation with international partners, including ongoing discussions with the United States on anti-crime initiatives.

Ukraine has already expressed its will to assist other country in drone warfare. Zelenskyy said Ukraine is ready to assist its partners in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf in countering the increasing threat posed by Iranian drone attacks.

He pointed to the broader security challenges facing Ukraine and its allies, noting that Iran’s actions are contributing to regional instability.

“The Iranian regime, struggling to maintain its power, is creating clear threats to all the countries in the region, as well as to global stability,” Zelenskyy stated.
