Western defense companies are lining up in growing numbers to test their technology on Ukraine's battlefields, where combat is rewriting the rules of warfare almost as fast as they are built, Business Insider reported on May 27.

Through the state-backed "Test in Ukraine" program, launched last summer, hundreds of international companies have applied to bring defense products into the country and evaluate them under realistic combat conditions.

Dozens are currently running tests, including on the battlefield, according to Andrii Hrytseniuk, chief executive of the Ukrainian innovation platform Brave1 .

"This is the No. 1 country in the world for drone usage," Hrytseniuk stated, adding that interest spans major defense firms and small startups, and that the number of participating companies keeps rising.

Companies that secure a permit can have their systems evaluated at a proving ground under near-combat conditions, either by testing directly or by allowing Ukraine to run the trials. Brave1 then connects them with soldiers who draw on front-line experience to recommend changes, and some firms receive battlefield data and feedback.

Occam Industries, a British startup building AI software for drones, arrived with European-made systems that performed in early tests but proved poorly suited to the front.

After Brave1 paired it with Ukrainian manufacturers, its software is now mounted on Ukrainian-made drones bound for combat. The testing let the company "quickly move from what doesn't work to what does," Occam noted.

The harder problem for many Western firms, Business Insider noted, is keeping pace with the rapid technological change that combat demands. Oleksii Vyskub, Ukraine's first deputy defense minister, explained that Ukrainian drones are frequently updated every three months before returning to the fight, while many Western firms revise designs only after lengthy review.

Vyskub could point to just one Western company ready to operate at that tempo. "With the majority of the companies, it takes a lot of time for them to develop a drone," he noted, urging firms to post full-time representatives in Ukraine to grasp how quickly soldiers' needs shift.

The program is one piece of how Kyiv has positioned itself as a leader in battlefield innovation, with demand for its expertise spreading abroad.

Ukrainian interceptor drones, developed against intensifying Russian air attacks, have drawn surging global interest amid Russian activity in Europe and Iran's waves of drone strikes across the Middle East. This spring, Kyiv signed drone and security agreements with NATO and Middle Eastern partners.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in an address last month that the country "is not just keeping up with the change" but ranks "among the leaders in the development of security technologies."

The nation's security experience and military expertise, he added, are "now the most sought-after products for dozens of countries worldwide."

The international demand for Ukraine's combat-tested systems has begun flowing in the opposite direction as well.

The US Defense Department recently requested testing a range of Ukrainian drones and electronic warfare systems, evaluating them for potential procurement and seeking access to critical technologies that could enable domestic replication of the equipment.
