According to the Athletics Federation of Ukraine on July 1, the 33-year-old athlete from Kyiv won the women's one-mile event in a time of 6:10.09.

The performance improved the previous world record by more than six seconds. The former best of 6:16.72 was set in 1990 in Kaunas by Lithuanian race walker Sada Eidikytė, who at the time competed for the Soviet Union.

Olyanovska's record-breaking performance came at the Continental Tour Silver competition in Eisenstadt, marking the fastest one-mile race walk ever recorded.

The new world record follows another landmark performance by Liudmyla Olyanovska, who earlier this year established a new indoor world record in the women's 5,000-meter race walk at the Ukrainian Athletics Championships in Kyiv.

According to Suspilne Sport, Olyanovska completed the distance in 19 minutes and 53 seconds, becoming the first athlete ever to finish the indoor 5,000-meter race walk in under 20 minutes.

Her performance eclipsed the previous world record, set by Italian race walker Eleonora Giorgi in 2014, by eight seconds.

Olyanovska's latest world record continues a strong run of international success for Ukrainian athletics. In March, Oleh Doroshchuk captured the men's high jump gold medal at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń with a clearance of 2.30 metres.

Having entered the competition among the leading favourites following several top-five finishes at previous editions, the Ukrainian took command of the event by successfully clearing 2.30 metres on his opening attempt.
