Australia Sanctions 14 Russians for Human Rights Abuses and War in Ukraine

The Australian government has announced new targeted financial sanctions and travel bans against 14 individuals complicit in suppressing political freedoms in Russia and supporting Moscow’s illegal war against Ukraine.
The decision was published on the website of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs on September 3.
“The human rights situation in Russia continues to deteriorate with violent crackdowns aimed at suppressing human rights and anti-war advocacy. We condemn Russia’s intimidation and reprisals against civil society and human rights defenders, and reiterate our call for Russia to comply with its international human rights obligations,” the statement reads.

According to the ministry, this move builds on Australia’s comprehensive sanctions framework against Russia. Since 2022, the country has introduced three packages of restrictive measures targeting those involved in the poisoning, mistreatment, and death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
The government underscored that Russia has failed to conduct an independent and transparent investigation into Navalny’s death. “Australia holds President Putin and the Russian Government responsible,” the Foreign Ministry stressed.
Earlier, it was reported that the United States imposed full blocking sanctions on a network of companies and maritime vessels accused of smuggling Iranian oil under the guise of Iraqi shipments.
