Belgium’s National Security Council will convene urgently on November 6 at 10 a.m., following multiple drone incidents over major airports and air bases, the Belgian Interior Minister announced amid serious disruptions to air traffic, according to a report by HLN on November 5.

On the evening of November 4, drones were spotted over Brussels Airport (Zaventem) and military sites in Florennes and Kleine-Brogel.

Flight operations at Zaventem had to be suspended twice and about 40 flights were cancelled, causing long queues at airline service desks.

The surveillance raised concerns of espionage, prompting the government to mobilize relevant agencies, according to HLN.

Authorities believe the drone that disrupted operations at Brussels Airport was a sophisticated, large-scale device—not the work of a hobbyist.

Sources familiar with the investigation told HLN the drone returned moments after air traffic resumed, passing deliberately close to the control tower, which managed to capture clear footage of it. Officials have described the maneuver as a calculated provocation.

Preliminary assessments suggest the aircraft was remotely controlled via 4G or 5G rather than standard radio frequencies, raising the possibility that it could have been operated from abroad using satellite links.

Security experts suspect the incident may be politically motivated. Belgium has come under pressure from the European Commission to redirect frozen Russian assets held by financial giant Euroclear toward funding Ukraine’s defense—an initiative that Moscow has condemned as an “act of war,” HLN writes.

Earlier remarks by the Defense Minister highlighted that Russia may be recruiting individuals to monitor sensitive sites in Belgium. The security meeting aims to assess the threat and coordinate a response across aviation and defense sectors, HLN stated.

Previously, it was reported that Belgium’s armed forces have been ordered to shoot down any unidentified drones flying over military installations, Chief of Defense Frederik Vansina announced.
