Bulgaria will end the transit of Russian gas next year, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced during his visit to the United States for the UN General Assembly, according to BNR on September 24.
“Following the call by President Donald Trump at the General Assembly, we, as part of the European Union, will join the Union’s decisions to suspend in the short term—in 2026—the contracts for the use or transit of Russian natural gas,” Zhelyazkov said.
According to him, by 2026 all contracts related to the use and transit of Russian gas will be terminated, and by 2028 the country aims to completely eliminate Russian gas from its domestic energy market.

Zhelyazkov noted that Bulgaria’s current gas consumption—both for industry and households—is already fully covered by imports of liquefied natural gas supplied through specialized terminals.
During the delegation’s visit to the US, the Bulgarian Energy Holding signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of North Dakota to cooperate on research into rare earth metals.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed that the EU remains on course to end its reliance on Russian fossil fuels by 2027.
