On August 19, 2024, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) are permitted to use Danish weapons in military operations on Russian territory, specifically in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have been advancing.

Rasmussen emphasized that Denmark’s support for Ukraine remains unchanged, and that using weapons in self-defense, even on the aggressor’s territory, is consistent with the rules of war. He noted that it is not feasible to impose restrictions on using weapons only within Ukrainian borders.

In May, Denmark and Norway indicated that they would not oppose the use of their supplied weapons for strikes on Russian territory. Germany also confirmed that German weapons provided to Ukraine could be used in such operations, citing Ukraine’s right to self-defense. Previously, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, and Canada had also given their approval for the use of their military equipment in the Kursk region.

It is important to note that Ukrainian forces conducted offensive operations in the Kursk region in August 2024, leading to a response from Russian authorities and an escalation of military actions in the area. On August 12, Ukrainian command confirmed control over parts of the Kursk region, and on August 15, it was reported that a military command was established in the region under the leadership of Major General Eduard Moskalyov.

Former Danish Defense Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen had previously expressed opposition to the use of Danish weapons outside Ukraine. However, Rasmussen’s recent statements reflect a shift in position in light of the ongoing situation.
