Denmark Expands Defense Cooperation With Ukraine Through Weapons Production, Danish MFA Confirms

Denmark is moving to deepen defense cooperation with Ukraine by expanding joint weapons production and offering Ukrainian companies a “safe haven” for manufacturing, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said during a press conference in Kyiv following his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on September 12, according to UNITED24 Media correspondednt.
Rasmussen highlighted a “major breakthrough” announced two weeks ago, when defense company Firepoint confirmed a significant investment in Denmark with the support of Danish authorities. He said this marks the first of many such initiatives.
“It started one and a half years ago when I visited Ukraine with the Minister of Defense and we met with the Ukrainian defense industry. They said: you are donating a lot, financing a lot—shouldn’t you invest more directly? That’s when we came up with the Danish Model 1.0, financing Ukrainian defense industry. Now we have taken a step forward, engaging Danish defense industry in Ukraine and most importantly, Ukrainian investments in Denmark,” Rasmussen explained.
According to him, Danish agencies have worked to remove bureaucratic obstacles to pave the way for Ukrainian firms to establish production in Denmark. “The whole idea is to give Ukraine a safe haven for production, most needed for your war with Russia, but it’s also in our own self-interest,” he said, noting that Denmark itself is ramping up defense spending.

Earlier in the day, Copenhagen announced the largest investment in air defense systems in Denmark’s history, which Rasmussen said is informed by lessons learned on the Ukrainian battlefield.
When asked about the number of countries involved or the names of Ukrainian companies, Rasmussen declined to give specifics but stressed that cooperation spans both major defense enterprises and startups. He pointed to Denmark’s expertise in robotics and drones as a strong match for Ukraine’s battlefield innovations.
“If we combine forces, bearing in mind how innovative Ukraine has been during the war, we could gain a lot,” the Danish foreign minister concluded.
Previously, it was reported that Ukraine is considering partially easing its arms export embargo, particularly in the drone sector, to facilitate joint production projects with European partners.
