Drones Blast Russian Railway Hub 350km From Ukraine, Massive Fire Reported

In the early hours of August 23, explosions were reported in the city of Petrov Val in Russia’s Volgograd region.

According to the Russian Telegram channel Astra, unidentified drones carried out strikes that triggered a fire in the area of the city’s railway station.

The facility serves as a key railway hub on the Privolzhskaya line, situated at the intersection of routes linking Saratov to Volgograd and Tambov to Kamyshin. It also hosts a locomotive depot responsible for maintaining rolling stock.

Regional governor Andrey Bocharov confirmed the drone attack but claimed the damage was caused by falling debris rather than direct strikes. He stated that three people were injured and reported a separate fire involving dry vegetation in the Kumylzhensky district, without addressing reports of a blaze at the railway site. These claims could not be independently verified.

Petrov Val lies more than 350 kilometers from Ukraine’s border. Analysts note that the station holds strategic importance for both civilian and military logistics, facilitating the transfer of equipment and fuel from central Russia to units deployed in Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian defense forces destroyed a Russian freight train carrying fuel tanks in the occupied Zaporizhzhia region, disrupting railway connections used to supply Russian troops. According to activist Petro Andriushchenko, the strike derailed the train near Urozhayne and Tokmak, after which it was hit again with additional aerial systems.
