Drones Strike Russian Iskander Missile Base Linked to Deadly Sumy Attack

Long-range drones targeted the base of Russia’s 112th Missile Brigade, which is equipped with Iskander ballistic missile systems, footage of the strike has surfaced across social media platforms and has been corroborated by local residents, according to Russian outlet Astra on April 16.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate identified the 112th Brigade, along with the 448th Missile Brigade, as responsible for the deadly missile strike on the city of Sumy on April 13, which killed dozens of civilians.
Publicly available information indicates the 112th Brigade is stationed near the city of Shuya, Ivanovo region, east of Moscow.
Multiple videos show fixed-wing drones striking a ground target as Russian forces attempt unsuccessfully to shoot them down with small-arms fire.
The 112th Brigade is armed with Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems, which Russian forces have repeatedly used to strike Ukrainian territory, including civilian infrastructure.
Russian media reports say this is the first time Ukraine has used its long-range Liutyi drones to strike deep into Russia’s Ivanovo region.

Following the attack in Shuya, military vehicles reportedly blocked off one of the city’s streets. Local authorities advised residents to remain indoors for the time being.
Russian officials later claimed that all incoming drones had been shot down by air defenses. They added that emergency teams were now “working at the site of falling debris.”
However, videos filmed by local residents contradict those claims, showing what appear to be successful drone impacts. The full extent of the damage remains unclear.
Just a day earlier, Ukraine’s Armed Forces also struck the deployment site of Russia’s 448th Missile Brigade, which is likewise accused of launching missiles at Sumy.
Preliminary, Ukrainian intelligence suggests the Russians may have used either Iskander-M ballistic missiles or North Korean KN-23 missiles in the April 13 attack.
Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed it targeted a Ukrainian military command post in the city of Sumy, even as evidence points to an attack on civilian infrastructure.
According to the ministry, two Iskander-M ballistic missiles struck a location where a meeting of Ukraine’s Sever Operational-Tactical Group command staff was reportedly underway. The strike allegedly resulted in the deaths of more than 60 Ukrainian service members.
The ministry accused Ukraine of using civilians as “human shields” by allegedly holding military gatherings in densely populated urban areas.
