European Commission Approves $4.2 Billion Aid Package for Ukraine
The European Commission has approved the disbursement of the first tranche nearly $4.2 billion to Ukraine under the Ukraine Facility program. This decision follows the European Commission’s assessment that Ukraine has satisfactorily met nine reform indicators. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, confirmed the approval via Twitter, emphasizing that this funding aims to support Ukraine’s macro-financial stability and the functioning of its public administration.
The Ukraine Facility program, endorsed earlier this year by EU leaders, allocates a total of $50 billion to Ukraine until 2027, contingent upon the country’s progress in implementing specified reforms across 69 areas. Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, expressed gratitude to the European Commission for its continued support, noting that the funds will enhance Ukraine’s financial stability.
In addition to the regular payments from the Ukraine Facility, Ukraine is also set to receive approximately $1.4-1.5 billion in August from EU assets frozen as part of sanctions against Russia.
This first tranche of $4.2 billion signifies ongoing support rather than a one-time assistance, underscoring the EU’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s economic resilience over the long term.
