Fico Threatens to Halt Slovakia’s Emergency Power to Ukraine Unless Druzhba Supplies Restored Monday

Slovakia will halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine unless oil shipments through the Druzhba pipeline are restored, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Sunday, according to Reuters on February 23.
Fico said he had carried out what he announced on Saturday and would ask SEPS, Slovakia’s state-owned transmission system operator, to stop the emergency power deliveries if oil supplies to Slovakia were not restored on Monday.

“Only in January 2026, these emergency supplies were needed to stabilize the Ukrainian energy network twice as much as in the whole year 2025,” Fico wrote in a social media post.
Hungary and Slovakia accounted for the majority of Ukraine’s electricity imports this month, though it was not immediately clear how much of that was provided under emergency arrangements.

Oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline to Slovakia and Hungary were halted on January 27 after a Russian drone strike damaged pipeline infrastructure in western Ukraine, Ukrainian officials have said.
Slovakia and Hungary are the only two European Union member states still importing Russian oil supplied via Druzhba.

Slovakia and Hungary have accused Kyiv of delaying repairs, an allegation Ukraine has rejected.
Earlier, it was reported that Hungary said it would block a new EU sanctions package and tied its stance to the halted Druzhba oil transit to Hungary and Slovakia.
