France Convenes UN Security Council Meeting to Address Russia’s Escalating Attacks on Ukraine

The United Nations Security Council will convene on April 29 to address Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine and its intensifying strikes on civilians, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced.
The meeting was called by France, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council.
“Ukraine is committed to peace efforts. We agreed to the U.S. proposal for a full ceasefire 49 days ago, but Russia did not,” Sybiha said, referencing the US-Ukraine agreement reached during talks in Jeddah on March 11.
Despite international efforts to de-escalate, Russia has ramped up missile and drone assaults on Ukrainian cities and towns. Kyiv continues to insist that a full, unconditional ceasefire is the necessary first step toward peace, which Moscow still refuses to accept.
Sybiha encouraged Security Council members to take a clear and united stance:"At today’s Security Council meeting, we urge members to express their strong support for Ukraine’s steps toward peace, clearly condemn Russia’s escalated terror against civilians, and take a principled stance on the need to put more pressure on Moscow.”
The meeting comes just days after Russia carried out its deadliest attack on Kyiv in recent months. On April 24, a missile strike killed 13 people and injured nearly 90 more.
Earlier, Russian forces launched a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine’s Cherkasy region, injuring six people and heavily damaging a gas infrastructure facility. The strike left around 117,000 residents without access to gas.
