German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that he aims to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities in collaboration with the United States, a statement he made during his speech in the Bundestag on July 9.
Speaking during a session in the Bundestag, Merz expressed his intention to engage with the US administration to reach agreements on providing additional air defense systems to Ukraine.
“Our support for Ukraine will not stop due to financial constraints or lack of personnel,” the Chancellor stated.
“The only shortage we currently face is in the production of military equipment, weapons, and ammunition,” Merz said, highlighting the need for greater cooperation between Germany and the US to bolster Ukraine’s defense.

The German Chancellor also condemned Russia for its daily attacks on Ukraine, which he described as “severe war crimes.”
The German Ministry of Defense echoed Merz’s statements, revealing that efforts are ongoing with partner countries to enhance Ukraine’s air defense systems.
A spokesperson for the ministry noted that discussions are underway to determine if partner nations could provide “resources that have not yet been utilized” to help strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Next week, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will visit the US, where he plans to discuss with US officials how the two countries can work together to bolster Ukraine’s air defense in the face of increasing Russian attacks.
The spokesperson for Germany’s Ministry of Defense described the images emerging from Ukraine as “horrific,” pointing to the destruction of civilian infrastructure, energy facilities, and the daily barrage of missiles and drones launched by Russia.

“All of this cannot leave anyone indifferent,” the spokesperson remarked. He added that Russia aims to push Ukraine’s air defense to the “limits of its capabilities.”
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia recently launched its largest-ever airstrike campaign since the beginning of the war.
During the night attack on July 9, Russia targeted western Ukraine with 728 drones and 13 missiles. Ukrainian defenders successfully intercepted or neutralized 711 drones and at least seven missiles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s actions, accusing the Kremlin of once again attempting to sabotage any efforts to establish a ceasefire.
Earlier, the German Chancellor also claimed that diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine war are exhausted.
