Germany Hit by Record Wave of Drone Intrusions Over Military Sites in October

Germany recorded an unprecedented number of drone sightings over its military facilities in October 2025, with an increasing share of activity centered around naval installations.
According to Reuters, the data was confirmed by Thorsten Akmann, Vice President of Germany’s military intelligence agency BAMAD.
“The Bundeswehr has critical infrastructure. At present, the branch most affected by drone surveillance is the navy,” Akmann told Reuters.
Although Akmann did not disclose exact figures or speculate on the reasons behind the growing focus on naval assets, the development has raised concern amid heightened regional security dynamics.
German authorities have noted that the majority of drone sightings over military sites in the past were concentrated around army and air force bases. Many of these sites hosted training programs for Ukrainian troops. In January 2025, German police opened an investigation into suspected Russian espionage after drones were spotted over several military facilities in Bavaria.
Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) registered a “low four-digit” number of drone incidents with suspected political motives across the first nine months of 2025. These incidents reportedly targeted Bundeswehr sites, defense contractors, and critical infrastructure, dpa reported, citing a police spokesperson.
Germany operates the largest Western naval fleet in the Baltic Sea region, making it a key NATO asset. The Baltic Sea has taken on increased strategic relevance for the Alliance since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russia’s Baltic Fleet is based near the heavily militarized Kaliningrad exclave.
According to Reuters, the Wilhelmshaven naval base on the North Sea is the Bundeswehr’s largest garrison and plays a central role in fleet maintenance and operations across both the North and Baltic seas.
Maintaining open sea lanes in the Baltic is considered critical to NATO. In the event of a military escalation with Russia, these maritime routes could serve as the only supply corridor to the Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—if the narrow land connection via Poland were compromised.
To strengthen NATO readiness in the region, Germany opened a multinational naval headquarters in 2024. The command center is tasked with overseeing NATO operations in the Baltic Sea during crisis scenarios.
Earlier, Der Tagesspiegel reported that German forces conducted a week-long urban warfare exercise in Berlin’s subway system, simulating mass-casualty attacks amid concerns that Russia could regain the capability to strike NATO territory by 2028—one year earlier than previously estimated.
