Macron: Ceasefire Between Ukraine and Russia Could Be Achieved in Coming Weeks

French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia could be achieved “in the coming weeks,” following his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, Fox News reported on February 24.
According to Macron, the proposed truce would apply to air, sea, and infrastructure targets, serving as a test of Russia’s true intentions.
“A ceasefire in the air, at sea, and concerning infrastructure. If it is not respected, it will be the clearest proof that Russia is not serious about its commitments,” Macron explained.
He also suggested that the ceasefire period could serve as a window for talks on security guarantees, occupied territories, and Ukraine’s reconstruction.
At the same time, Macron urged Trump to be cautious in peace negotiations.
“We want peace. And I think President Trump’s initiative is very positive. But my message was: be careful, because we need something substantial for Ukraine,” Macron said.
The French president acknowledged that Trump’s return to power could shift the approach to ending the war.
Macron emphasized that the U.S. and France must work together to establish long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, warning that a simple ceasefire would not be enough given Russia’s history of violating past agreements, including the 2014 and 2015 Minsk Accords.
Earlier, Macron announced that France and the United Kingdom developed a plan to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, which may include the deployment of European troops on Ukrainian territory.
During a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Macron stated that the security guarantee plan could involve sending European soldiers to Ukraine, but they “will not necessarily be stationed on the front line” and will instead be present “as a guarantee.”
