Majority of Europeans Back EU-Funded Weapons for Ukraine, Survey Reveals

A clear majority of European Union citizens back the continued financing of weapons deliveries to Ukraine, according to a new Eurobarometer survey published on May 28.
The poll found that 59% of EU respondents support the bloc using its funds to purchase and supply arms to Ukraine, as Kyiv continues its defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The survey, commissioned by the European Commission, also shows that a broad majority of Europeans continue to approve of the EU’s overall response to Russia’s war, now in its third year.

Among key findings:
80% of respondents support accepting people fleeing the war into the EU;
76% back financial and humanitarian support for Ukraine;
72% support economic sanctions against the Russian government, businesses, and individuals;
60% favor granting Ukraine official EU candidate status.
The war in Ukraine remains the top concern among EU citizens, with 27% naming it the most important issue facing the Union — ahead of global affairs (24%) and defense/security (20%).
A strong majority of respondents (77%) also agree that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represents a threat to the EU’s own security.
Earlier, Sweden announced a new defense aid package worth 4.8 billion kronor (approximately $447 million) to strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities.
