The MBDA consortium has resumed production of the Franco-British SCALP/Storm Shadow air-launched cruise missiles, French Minister of Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu announced on June 9.

“Production of SCALP missiles for equipping our armed forces will resume in 2025, 15 years after our last order,” Lecornu stated in a post on X.

The missiles will be produced at MBDA’s British facility in Stevenage.

Lecornu also emphasized that these missiles are actively being used in the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war.

The French Minister suggested that, in addition to replenishing the stockpiles of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the French Air and Space Force, some of the newly produced missiles could potentially be supplied to Ukraine.

In December 2024, the French Senate outlined plans for additional ammunition orders, including SCALP cruise missiles.

About the SCALP/Storm Shadow Missile

The SCALP/Storm Shadow is a long-range air-to-surface cruise missile developed by the UK and France. The missile is designed to overcome anti-aircraft systems and strike high-value stationary or immobile targets, including bunkers.

The missile is 5.1 meters long and has a launch weight of up to 1,300 kg, with a warhead weighing 450 kg.

The SCALP EG (French version) and Storm Shadow (British version) are largely identical, differing only in software and the types of aircraft designed to carry the missile.

The missile has a claimed range of over 250 km in its export version and up to 560 km for use by the French and British armies.

Previously, it was reported that Ukraine struck military infrastructure in Donetsk and Luhansk using Storm Shadow missiles.
