Unmanned aerial vehicles struck an industrial area in Russia’s Leningrad region overnight on April 3, with the target believed to be a defense-related explosives plant located in the settlement of Morozova.

According to regional governor Alexander Drozdenko, air defenses intercepted several drones approaching the area.

“Seven hostile UAVs have been shot down… debris was recorded falling in the Vsevolozhsky district. In the industrial zone of the Morozova settlement, the roof of a non-operational building was damaged,” he stated.

At the same time, independent Russian outlet Astra reported that the targeted area hosts the state-owned “Morozov Plant,” a facility associated with Russia’s defense-industrial complex. According to Astra, the plant specializes in the production of explosives used in military applications.

Ukrainian military intelligence has previously identified the facility as part of Russia’s missile production chain. According to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR), the plant is involved in developing solid fuel for ballistic missile systems, including Topol-M, and supplies propellant components for Iskander-M missiles.

Russian authorities said two people were injured in the incident and hospitalized, while maintaining that critical infrastructure was not significantly affected. Additional restrictions were reportedly introduced at several airports, including Pulkovo and Moscow hubs, amid the drone activity, according to Russian officials.

The Morozov plant is under sanctions imposed by the US, EU, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and other countries due to its role in Russia’s military-industrial sector.

The overnight strikes were not limited to the Leningrad region. According to Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin, multiple drones were also intercepted on approach to the Russian capital. Separate reports indicated drone activity over Voronezh.

Earlier, Ukrainian drone strikes in late March damaged key oil infrastructure at Russia’s Primorsk and Ust-Luga ports, according to Reuters on April 2. Satellite imagery showed multiple storage tanks hit, disabling significant capacity and disrupting export schedules at facilities handling over 40% of Russia’s seaborne oil exports.
