Drone sightings forced Germany’s Munich Airport to shut down flight operations late Thursday night, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers and diverting flights across the region, according to German magazine Der Spiegel on October 3.

Takeoffs were halted at 10:18 p.m. local time on October 2 after multiple reports of drones flying near and directly over the airfield.

Federal police confirmed they received “several reports from individuals about a drone near the airport. Later, there were also reports of drones directly above the airport grounds. At first, it was unclear whether it was a single device or several,” Der Spiegel reported.

In total, 17 departing flights were canceled, affecting nearly 3,000 travelers, while 15 incoming flights were rerouted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt. Police officers, supported by a helicopter, searched the surrounding area but failed to locate any drones or suspects, airport authorities reported.

Stranded passengers were accommodated inside the terminal, where airport staff provided camp beds, blankets, food, and drinks in cooperation with airlines.

The incident is part of a broader uptick in drone-related disruptions at European airports, raising concerns about aviation security and prompting authorities to strengthen protections around critical infrastructure.

Earlier, the Danish Armed Forces issued a secret order to draft a portion of reservists in response to recent sightings of unidentified drones.
