A Russian missile strike targeted a production facility owned by the American confectionery giant Mondelez International in Trostianets, Sumy region, overnight on February 22.

Minister Sybiha confirmed that there were no casualties resulting from the attack. The Trostianets facility is a major industrial hub responsible for manufacturing globally recognized brands, including Oreo cookies, Milka and Toblerone chocolate, and Jacobs coffee.

In a statement released on X, the Minister emphasized that the strike was a deliberate hit on a civilian target that contributes to both the Ukrainian and American economies.

“This is not a military target, but a factory that employs Ukrainians and contributes to both our and the American economies,” Sybiha stated in his official post. The Minister emphasized that the strike represents a deliberate act of “economic terror” aimed at international business interests.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the attack on the Mondelez facility is part of a broader pattern of Russian strikes against American business assets in Ukraine.

In his statement, Sybiha argued that such actions undermine any possibility of diplomatic economic discussions between Washington and Moscow. “When Russian missiles hit such objects, they are aimed not only at Ukraine. They are aimed at American business interests in Europe,” the minister added.

As of Sunday morning, representatives from Mondelez International have not issued an official statement regarding the extent of the operational disruptions at the Trostianets plant. The Sumy Regional Military Administration confirmed that emergency services worked at the site to extinguish fires caused by the impact.

This is not the first time US business in Ukraine has been targeted by Russian strikes. Earlier in August, a Russian missile strike hit a Flex factory in Mukachevo, Zakarparpattia region, damaging one of the largest US business investments in the region.

According to the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, the attack was seen as a direct strike on American business interests. Flex confirmed several injuries, with six people hospitalized, and emphasized that the facility only manufactures civilian goods like coffee machines.
