In response to a Russian missile strike on Ukrainian territory, Poland's military raised combat readiness early on March 24, deploying fighter jets and placing ground-based intelligence and air defense systems on high alert.

The Polish Armed Forces stated that, in response to Russia's long-range aviation targeting Ukraine, Polish and allied aircraft began operating within Polish airspace.

Following operational procedures, Poland's military mobilized necessary forces and resources, including the dispatch of fighter jets and a radar detection aircraft. Ground-based air defense and radar intelligence systems were also placed on heightened alert.

“These actions are of a preventive nature and are aimed at securing the airspace and its protection, particularly in areas adjacent to the threatened regions,” the statement read.

The Polish military reassured the public that the situation is under control, with all relevant forces and resources remaining ready to respond immediately to any further developments.

In addition to addressing missile threats, Poland's military continues to closely monitor Russian activities in the region, including the ongoing presence of Russian reconnaissance flights over NATO airspace. On March 13, Polish Air Force MiG-29 fighters intercepted and escorted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, according to Army Recognition.

The Polish Operational Command confirmed that the Russian aircraft was operating in international airspace with its transponder off and without a filed flight plan. Polish fighters were quickly scrambled to identify and escort the aircraft, marking the ninth such Russian reconnaissance mission detected in the region this year.

The Il-20, known by NATO as the “Coot-A,” is a specialized surveillance platform designed to gather electronic intelligence. Rather than attempting to breach physical borders, the aircraft's goal is to collect data on NATO radar activity, radio communications, and quick-reaction scramble times.

By flying without identification near sovereign airspace, Russian forces compel NATO to respond, enabling Russian intelligence to actively map the alliance's defensive structures and command-and-control networks, Army Recognition reported.

Germany has ramped up its air policing operations over Poland in response to Russian drone incursions, with the operations already in effect.

The spokesperson from the German defense ministry explained that the aviation units reached operational readiness the previous evening, ensuring continuous airspace monitoring with two alarm rotas in place to provide 24/7 coverage. Both rotas are fully qualified for the mission, ensuring constant protection against potential aerial threats.
