Poland to Build Europe’s Largest Logistics Hub to Support Ukraine’s Reconstruction

Poland will significantly expand the Sławków terminal, nearly doubling its capacity to transform it into the largest transshipment and logistics hub in Europe. One of the key drivers behind the project is the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said, as reported by TVN24 on May 26.
“This is a major logistics project—the largest dry port,” said Wojciech Balczun, head of Poland’s Industrial Development Agency. “We’re beginning the second phase of investment to expand this Euroterminal. Several more phases—third, fourth, and fifth—are planned. We estimate the total cost of the project at over €1 billion.”
Located at the intersection of the European standard-gauge rail network and the westernmost point of the 1,520 mm broad-gauge railway used in Ukraine and other post-Soviet states, the Sławków terminal is strategically positioned to handle freight traffic between Asia, the Far East, and Western Europe.

The expansion, currently underway, will boost the terminal’s capacity from approximately 285,000 standard containers per year to over 500,000. The upgrade includes the addition of seven new tracks and modern transshipment equipment. While the terminal currently handles mainly eastbound cargo, its operational scope will expand significantly once the works are completed.
The plan also includes the construction of a second container terminal, with a long-term goal of building five in total. Completion is scheduled for 2027.
According to Tusk, the terminal will serve as a key transit point for goods from Asia and China once the war in Ukraine ends. He emphasized the importance of Poland maintaining control over the terminal and positioning itself as a central player in Ukraine’s reconstruction.
“There’s nothing wrong with saying this: we want to make a lot of money for Poland by helping rebuild Ukraine,” Tusk said. “We want to help, but we also want to profit from it—and that requires this specialized hub.”
Previously, it was reported that Poland will conduct joint military exercises with NATO allies in response to the upcoming Zapad drills planned by Russia and Belarus for September, Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk announced, according to TVN24 on May 26.
