Putin: Russia Accepts Ukraine’s Sovereignty but Opposes Military Threats

Russian leader Vladimir Putin stated in an interview with Russian media on February 24 that while Russia does not oppose Ukraine maintaining its sovereignty, it firmly insists that Ukrainian territory must not be used as a military platform against Moscow.
“Russia has nothing against Ukraine’s statehood, but its territory must not be used as a hostile staging ground against us,” Putin said.
Putin also underscored the importance of European involvement in diplomatic efforts to resolve Russian war against Ukraine, stressing that their participation remains essential.
“The participation of Europe in the negotiation process on Ukraine is needed,” he emphasized.
Regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance on Ukraine, Putin described him as taking a direct and pragmatic approach.
“Trump wants to improve the political situation in Ukraine. He acts straightforwardly, without much restraint,” Putin noted.
According to Putin, Trump has more flexibility in addressing the Ukraine situation compared to European leaders, who face more political and institutional constraints.
“Unlike European leaders, Trump has a freer hand in dealing with the Ukraine situation,” he stated.
He also voiced support for Trump’s suggestion that the U.S., Russia, and China should significantly reduce their military budgets, proposing a 50% cut.
“I think it’s a good idea. The U.S. would cut by 50%, we would cut by 50%, and then China would join if it wanted,” Putin said.
Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow will cease military operations in Ukraine only upon securing agreements that fully align with Russia’s interests.
