Putin’s Valdai Retreat Turns Fortress With Dozens of Pantsir-S1 Units Spotted From Space

Twelve Pantsir-S1 air defense systems have been discovered around Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s residence in Valdai, located in the Novgorod region of Russia, about 300 kilometers northwest of Moscow. Elevated positions and towers have been identified for their placement, journalist Mark Krutov from Radio Free Europe reported, referencing data from analyst Jembob on August 13.
“How many air defense towers does Putin need to protect his Valdai residence, where, as is known, his sons and their mother, Alina Kabaeva, spend considerable time?” Krutov wrote.
He published a map highlighting the potential locations for the Pantsir-S1 air defense systems.

Another OSINT analyst, Jembob, reviewed new satellite images showing the presence of air defense systems around Valdai.
The Pantsir-S1 is a Russian mobile air defense system that combines radar-guided missiles and 30mm automatic guns to protect against a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, and missiles. Highly mobile and equipped with advanced radar, it can detect and engage multiple targets simultaneously at ranges up to 30 kilometers for missiles and 4 kilometers for its guns.
Additionally, researchers found at least one S-400 missile defense system near Putin’s residence.
Satellite images from July 17, 2025, revealed that Russian forces had concentrated at least seven Pantsir-S1 air defense systems around Putin’s residence in the Leningrad region.

Earlier, partisans in Sevastopol have discovered a Russian command post coordinating airstrikes on southern Ukraine, situated on the site of the former Sevastopol Aviation Plant, now functioning as a branch of the state-owned enterprise Aviakomplekt.
