Romania continues to face persistent security threats from the Russian Federation, according to General Gheorghiță Vlad, Chief of the Romanian Defense General Staff.

In comments reported by Defense Romania on May 22, General Vlad noted that GPS spoofing attacks targeting Romanian systems occur regularly, with incidents recorded on a weekly basis. He also highlighted the continued presence of Russian naval mines in the Black Sea, 122 of which have been detected since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The general warned of additional risks, including potential attacks on underwater infrastructure, contributing to what he described as a constant atmosphere of tension.

“Many of the threats we face today, primarily those created by the Russian Federation, remain ongoing,” Vlad said.

Addressing concerns about a potential withdrawal of US forces from Romania, the general stated that the country is prepared, but emphasized that “there are currently no specific indications this will occur.”

“Our border with Ukraine is the longest, 800 kilometers (approximately 497 miles). The threat is real, and no country in the world can fully secure such a vast area with the air defense capabilities currently available,” he added.

Earlier, Romania’s President-Elect Nicușor Dan had stated that while Romania can offer substantial operational support to its Western allies, it should not take part directly in any potential deterrence contingent in Ukraine.

Commenting on Romania’s role in the proposed allied mission, currently under discussion, Dan expressed support for providing various forms of assistance to partner countries, but firmly opposed the deployment of Romanian troops as part of the contingent.
