Romania’s interim president, Ilie Boloian, has signed two decrees authorizing the shooting down of drones that violate Romanian airspace.

The presidential administration confirmed on May 19, according to Romanian media outlet Digi24, that Boloian enacted regulations based on two laws: the Law on Control over the Use of National Airspace and the Law on the Implementation of Military Missions in Peacetime on Romanian territory.

Under the first law, drones entering Romania can be destroyed or neutralized if Romanian or NATO forces are unable to control their flight. The second law outlines procedures for conducting military operations during peacetime within the country.

Both laws were approved by the Romanian Senate in February 2025. Attempts by political groups, including the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), Youth Party (POT), and SOS România, to challenge the legislation in the Constitutional Court were rejected, according to Digi24.

The Ukrainian Air Force has reported several incursions by Russian UAVs into Romanian airspace. Notably, in September 2024, a group of Russian attack drones crossed into Romania, raising security concerns.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Romania’s newly elected President, Nicușor Dan, during a phone call and invited him to visit Ukraine.
