Romanian President-Elect Nicușor Dan Offers Operational Backing for Ukraine Contingent

Elected President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, believes Romania can provide significant operational support to Western allies as part of a potential deterrence contingent in Ukraine, but should not directly participate in it.
These remarks were reported by Politico on May 21.
Commenting on Romania’s potential role in the Western allies’ contingent in Ukraine—currently under discussion—Nicușor Dan said he supports offering various forms of assistance to partners but opposes deploying Romanian troops as part of the contingent.
“First, to have a big operational support on Romanian territory, yes. To be part of the armies guaranteeing peace in Ukraine, no. I think it would not be very appropriate because of the tension that already exists between Romania and Russia,” he said.
Dan also emphasized that “anything on Ukraine has to be decided and agreed by the Ukrainians themselves.”
He added that he is “not optimistic” about the prospects for achieving peace in the near future but praised European countries for uniting their efforts and committing to support Ukraine until it can negotiate peace on acceptable terms.
Liberal Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan defeated far-right candidate George Simion in the second round of Romania’s presidential election on May 18. The vote saw unprecedented mobilization of the Romanian diaspora, with the majority abroad voting in favor of Dan.
Simion acknowledged his defeat but continues to challenge the election results.
Previously, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Romania’s newly elected President, Nicușor Dan, extending congratulations on his election victory and inviting him to make an official visit to Ukraine.
