Russia has launched another disinformation campaign, attempting to shift the responsibility for its own war crimes onto Ukraine.

According to the Center for Countering Disinformation on January 22, the Russian propaganda entity “International Public Tribunal” released a new “report” accusing Ukraine of “genocide” and “crimes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces” in Pokrovsk, Donetsk region.

“The loud accusations are backed by a familiar propaganda setup: a made-up ‘tribunal’ with no international or legal status, statements from Russian officials representing the criminal Putin regime, and a complete lack of independent evidence,” the center’s statement reads.

Representatives of the “tribunal” claim that the “scorched earth” tactics in Pokrovsk were allegedly authorized by Ukraine's leadership. However, over more than a year of fierce fighting for Pokrovsk, Russia’s army has almost completely destroyed the city, killing its residents.

“The launch of this campaign clearly aims to shift the blame for Russia's own war crimes in Pokrovsk onto Ukraine,” the center added.

In August 2025, Russian state propagandists released a film titled At the Edge of the Abyss, which covers the siege of Mariupol. The film inadvertently documents war crimes committed by Russian forces and depicts intentional attacks on civilians.

One particularly disturbing scene shows Russian soldiers firing on a civilian car carrying elderly Ukrainians and children.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces had apprehended a Russian serviceman involved in the execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war in Russia’s Kursk region in October of the previous year.
