Moscow’s Foreign Ministry on July 15 rejected US President Donald Trump’s demand that Russian leader Vladimir Putin secure a peace deal in Ukraine within 50 days, calling the one-sided ultimatum “very strange” and highlighting the absence of any comparable call on Ukraine, as was reported by Moscow Times on the same day.

Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko characterized Trump’s 50-day deadline as “very strange,” noting that “to date, one party is physically absent—that is the Ukrainian side,” and arguing that pressing only Russia to negotiate demonstrated a lack of genuine Western commitment to peace.

Grushko said Moscow drew from this approach the conclusion that “there is no real Western interest in facilitating a successful conclusion to the talks.”

His colleague, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, likewise deemed any attempt to impose deadlines on Russia “unacceptable,” insisting that “Russia wants the US and NATO to treat Moscow’s position with utmost seriousness.”

Ryabkov’s comments followed Trump’s July 14 announcement that, absent a deal within 50 days, the United States would impose secondary tariffs of up to 100 percent on Russia and its trading partners  .

Trump, expressing frustration that he had anticipated a peace agreement “two months ago,” called direct talks “pointless” as long as bombings continued.

Earlier, the White House threatened to impose secondary sanctions on Russia and its trade partners if no peace agreement was reached, raising tariffs by up to 100 percent.
