Russia has developed a new modification of guided aerial bombs that are claimed to resist electronic warfare interference and strike targets at distances of up to 200 kilometers, according to Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s Defense Minister, speaking on February 11.

“Russian guided bombs remain a serious problem for us. They have too many of them, and the destruction they cause is enormous. Naturally, the enemy understands this and is constantly improving them,” Beskrestnov said.

He noted that the latest UMPB-5 variants are based on the FAB-500 aerial bomb. A version equipped with a rocket motor can reportedly reach targets up to 200 kilometers away, while the non-powered glide configuration is capable of traveling roughly 150 kilometers.

“At the same time, I want to stress that there is nothing fundamentally new technologically,” the adviser added. “But we would certainly like to study the new electronic-warfare protection system they are advertising.”

The continued evolution of long-range guided bombs highlights Moscow’s effort to extend strike reach while attempting to counter Ukraine’s growing electronic warfare capabilities.

Russia is using KAB bombs to strike Ukraine daily. In July 2025, for instance, Russian forces attacked residential areas of Kharkiv, hitting the central Shevchenkivskyi district with two KABs and injuring at least 22 people, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

Two explosions were reported at around 11:06 a.m., according to Suspilne journalists on the ground. The Ukrainian Air Force said the attacks involved KABs launched from the north in the direction of Kharkiv.

One of the bombs hit a high-rise apartment building. A second strike landed on a civilian enterprise, sparking a fire.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) disclosed additional information on Russia’s production of Universal Planning and Correction Modules (UMPK), which Moscow is widely using to conduct airstrikes against Ukraine.
