Russia Has Committed Over 7,000 Documented Environmental Crimes in Ukraine
Since the beginning of its full-scale invasion, Russia has committed over 7,000 environmental crimes in Ukraine that have been documented, causing damages estimated at €72.9 billion (around $76 billion), according to a January 21 post by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
The damages include soil and land contamination, damage to nature reserves and protected ecosystems, air and water pollution, including seas, as well as the war’s impact on climate change.
“The data on environmental damage will serve as a foundation for Ukraine’s green recovery. Currently, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources is working on a framework law, 'On the Fundamentals of Green Recovery, ' which will outline the key principles and approaches for sustainable rebuilding in alignment with European standards,” said Olha Yukhymchuk, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine for European Integration.
Sustainable development and green recovery will be central themes of this year’s URC2025 , scheduled to take place in Rome on July 10-11, 2025. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources is working on a list of preparatory measures for the Conference in collaboration with the Italian side.
URC2025 continues the series of annual high-level events focused on Ukraine’s rapid recovery and long-term rebuilding, launched in response to Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
At the end of August 2024, it was reported that all of Ukraine’s hydroelectric power plants have been targeted by Russian attacks, resulting in a loss of about 40% of generation capacity.
