Russia Kills at Least Five People and Wounds 29 Across Ukraine Ahead of Türkiye Peace Talks

Russian attacks have killed at least five people and injured 29 across Ukraine in the past 24 hours, regional officials reported on May 15, just hours ahead of scheduled peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Türkiye.
Sumy region
On May 14, Russia launched multiple attacks on the Sumy region, using drones, missiles, and guided aerial bombs, killing three civilians and wounding six others, the Sumy Regional Military Administration reported. Two more people were injured in the Bilopillia community, and another person was wounded in Nedryhailiv.

Kharkiv region
Six settlements in the Kharkiv region came under Russian fire over the past day, according to Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the local Regional State Administration.
A 60-year-old man was killed in the city of Kupiansk. In the nearby settlement of Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, a 58-year-old woman was injured. Two more civilians, an 86-year-old man and a 75-year-old man, were wounded in the village of Kozacha Lopan.

Donetsk region
On May 14, Russian forces killed one civilian in the village of Torske, Donetsk region, and injured seven others across the region, according to Vadym Filashkin, Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration.
Dnipropetrovsk region
Russian forces used drones and artillery to shell the Nikopol district throughout the past day, targeting the communities of Nikopol, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka, Myrove, and Pokrovske, local authorities reported. A 67-year-old woman was injured.
Kherson region
Russia targeted social infrastructure and residential areas across the region, launching attacks on tens of settlements, including Kherson, Beryslav, Ivanivka, Shliakhove, damaging an apartment building and 12 private homes, local authorities reported. Several civilian vehicles were also destroyed.
Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the regional military administration, stated that at least nine people were wounded.

On May 15, Ukrainian and Russian delegations are expected to meet in Istanbul, marking the first direct negotiations since initial ceasefire efforts collapsed in spring 2022.
Zelenskyy has confirmed his participation and renewed his call for a ceasefire ahead of the meeting. However, it was reported that Russian leader Vladimir Putin was not on Russia’s delegation for the upcoming negotiations.
