Russia Smuggles Over 100 Cultural Treasures From Temporary Occupied Crimea

Russia has illegally removed more than 100 cultural artifacts from temporary occupied Crimea, according to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR) on July 7.
In a new report, HUR details the theft of 110 items uncovered during archaeological excavations conducted by Russian authorities between 2014 and 2025. The evidence has been published in the “Stolen Heritage” section of the War&Sanctions portal.
The looted artifacts were excavated from key historical sites, including the Artezian Settlement, the Genoese Fortress of Chembalo, and the southern outskirts of Chersonesus Taurica.

Ukrainian intelligence also identified cultural valuables taken from the Kadikovske site — a former Roman military camp — where Russia’s occupation administration now plans to build a shopping mall.
Some of the stolen items came directly from the National Preserve “Chersonesus Taurica,” with Russian officials disguising the removal as part of a so-called “temporary exhibition” at the Yekaterinburg Museum of History.
Earlier, the Netherlands’ House of Representatives has officially recognized the 1944 forced deportation of the Crimean Tatar people as an act of genocide. The resolution was adopted on June 18.
In the accompanying statement, lawmakers noted that since Russia’s occupation of Crimea in 2014, numerous Crimean Tatars have faced unlawful imprisonment, torture, and enforced disappearances. The motion concludes that Russia has likely continued its genocidal policies against the Crimean Tatar population.
